Old wood stoves
are a problem

U P D A T E

New program to launch in late summer 2008:

Sign up for Clean Air Newsline to find out when new program begins.

They are inefficient, waste fuel, create dust in your home and can contribute to unhealthy indoor air because of excessive wood smoke.  These old stoves also pollute the outdoor air in residential neighborhoods creating a community health issue.  But there is a solution.  You can replace your old wood stove with new technology and receive many benefits, including cleaner air.

Receive at least $750 for your old wood stove!

In order to improve air quality in specific areas, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency will be offering financial incentives to help you replace your old wood stove or fireplace insert if you live in designated areas.  Beginning in late summer 2008, coupons for discounts on new devices will be offered to residents living in Darrington, Everett, Marysville and Tacoma as well as certain surrounding Pierce County communities. The goal of these incentives is to help reduce residential wood smoke by replacing old wood stoves and wood burning fireplace inserts with cleaner-heating, more-efficient home heating options: certified wood stoves or fireplace inserts meeting Washington emission standards; pellet, natural gas, propane or oil stoves or fireplace inserts; oil or gas central furnaces, and electric heat pumps.

"Instant rebate" coupons -- limited availability until funds runs out

If you have a wood burning stove or fireplace insert that qualifies, you can receive an "instant rebate" coupon for up to $750 - $1,500 off the price of a new heating device.  One condition of the coupon is that you must surrender your old wood burning stove or fireplace insert for destruction and recycling when you make the new purchase.  The coupon is good towards the purchase of a new device, whether a hearth product or central heating appliance.  Higher discounts, between $2,800 - $3,000, are available to income-qualified applicants.  Additional incentives from local utilities may also available for some new heating devices and weatherization services, and financing may be available through select partners.
