Just want to replace the old stove that currently heats a room or two? Choose one of these replacement hearth products:
- Natural gas freestanding stove
- Natural gas fireplace insert
- Propane freestanding stove
- Propane fireplace insert
- Oil freestanding stove
- Pellet freestanding stove that meets Washington State emission standard
- Pellet fireplace insert that meets Washington State emission standard
- Wood stove that meets Washington State emissions standard
- Wood-burning fireplace insert that meets Washington State emission standards
Options for
whole-house heat
Instead of replacing your old stove with another hearth product, you can replace both it and your old furnace with a new heating system. You'll receive a discount on a super-efficient furnace or heat pump that will keep your whole house warm:
- Electric heat pump
- High-efficiency electric, natural gas, propane or oil furnace
Many of these options carry additional incentives from participating utilities and contractors (see below).

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency / Washington Department of Ecology incentives:
General Program Incentive Rebates
$750 for certified wood stove or fireplace insert*
$1,500 for natural gas, propane, oil or pellet* stove or fireplace insert; high-efficiency electric, natural gas, propane or oil furnace; or electric heat pump
Income-Qualified Program Incentive Rebates
$2,800 for certified wood stove or fireplace insert*
$3,000 for natural gas, propane, oil or pellet* stove or fireplace insert; high-efficiency natural gas, propane or oil furnace; or electric heat pump
* Pellet stoves or inserts must be those approved for installation in Washington by the Department of Ecology.
Potential additional incentives from other partners:
Puget Sound Energy:
- $200 to $350 rebates on natural gas furnaces and air-source heat pumps; $1,200 on ductless heat pumps in PSE electric customer using electric furnace or baseboards (1-800-562-1482)
- $100-$1,600 rebates for insulation (1-800-562-1482). Free weatherization and insulation for income qualified (Tacoma: 253-593-2336; Pierce County: 1-800-348-7144)
Tacoma Power:
- $400 rebates on heat pumps and up to $600 of free duct sealing for qualifying high-efficiency air-source heat pump systems (253-502-8377 or e-mail power@cityoftacoma)
- Up to $4,600 in rebates for new windows, insulation and duct sealing, and zero-interest loan for the balance. Free weatherization for qualifying low-income customers; call 253-502-8363 or e-mail power@cityoftacoma.com
Pierce County Community Action Agency:
- Grants
for income qualified for:

Cost Expectations
It is important to keep in mind as you visit with retailers about your new heating appliance purchase that there are potential additional costs, beyond the cost of the appliance. This includes (but may not be limited to) the cost of:
- Installation of new heating device
- Chimney and other repairs
- New or altered venting
- Hearth pad and backing installation or repair
- Installation of new and/or removal of old natural gas piping
- Removal of your old stove or insert
- Destruction of your old stove or insert
Participating Retailers
Many area home-heating retailers and contractors are participating in the Puget Sound Wood Stove Replacement Program. When you visit their store or arrange for a home consultation, they can help your determine which heating device best fits your needs. Only program-approved retailers can honor your coupon.
Like any major purchase, it is wise to do your research, so feel free to talk with more than one participating retailer.

Step-by-Step Guidance
Once you receive a coupon for the Puget Sound Wood Stove Replacement Program, you need to act quickly! Your coupon expires 45 days from its issue date. However, if there is high demand for replacements, program funds could run out sooner and your coupon will become invalid.
