Agency meteorologist receives national award
Feb. 15, 2006 – Mike Gilroy, Technical Services Manager for the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, was recognized at EPA’s National Air Quality Conference in San Antonio Feb. 8 for his national leadership role in promoting air quality forecasting and communication.
Before an audience of several hundred air quality planners, meteorologists and communicators from across the country, Chet Wayland, Associate Director for Outreach and Information at EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning & Standards, presented Mike with the AIRNOW Outstanding Partner Award, citing Mike’s “insight, leadership and enduring dedication to the advancement of the AIRNOW program.”
AIRNOW is a program where air monitoring data and air quality forecasts from across the country is posted, along with information about the health effects of air pollution. It is intended to give people two-day air-quality forecasts, especially those with health problems that are exacerbated by air pollution, so they can plan their activities to minimize their exposure to elevated levels. The AIRNOW system is also the chief source of air quality information for TV meteorologist across the country.
Mike has been with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency since 1995. As Technical Services Manager, he is responsible for air quality monitoring, data gathering and analysis, forecasting and the information technology staff. He has been active at the national level both with the AIRNOW program and with monitoring issues, planning activities and technical policy development.
