Calend-Air Note: June 5, 2005

Jun. 3, 2005 – Green Cities: Where the Future Lives" is the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, observed on June 5th. To mark the occasion, mayors and urban planners from across the globe — including Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels — will gather in San Francisco to exchange ideas and pledge support for a host of environmental accords that will lead cities toward a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future.

The “Urban Environmental Accords are comprised of 21 actions cities can take toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing truly sustainable urban centers, following themes such as energy efficiency, clean transportation, and green building.

The Pacific Northwest has a proud tradition in promoting earth-friendly ways of living, and is already adopting policies to ensure the beauty of the region remains intact for future generations. In fact, Seattle was selected as one of four U.S. cities to be featured in an upcoming PBS special focusing on pioneering efforts to create sustainable urban ecosystems. The program, “Edens Lost and Found” premieres this fall.

The Seattle segment is accompanied by an online community action guide created by the City of Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment in partnership with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and others, which is filled with 101 everyday things YOU can do to adopt more sustainable ways of living, including 14 that directly promote cleaner, healthier air.
