Think oil and filter changes

Here are some tips for keeping your engine running smooth and efficiently.

  1. Maintain your vehicle. Regular vehicle maintenance reduces fuel usage and pollution. Fixing a faulty oxygen sensor can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent. Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of four percent.

  2. Check & replace air filters regularly. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car's gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. Your car's air filter keeps impurities from damaging the inside of your engine. Not only will replacing a dirty air filter save gas, it will protect your engine.

  3. Use the manufacturer’s recommendation for motor oil grade and oil change intervals to improve gas mileage by 1-2 percent and avoid waste. Look for motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

  4. Keep your tires properly inflated to decrease drag and fuel consumption. You can improve gas mileage by around 3.3 percent and also improve safety and tire life. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.4 percent for every 1 psi (pounds per square inch) drop in pressure of all four tires.

  5. Check your fuel efficiency regularly. Track your mileage every time you refuel to see how efficiently your engine is running. If your mileage dips significantly below what is typical for your engine, have it checked out.

  6. Stop at the click. When refueling your vehicle, stop pumping when you hear the handle on the gas nozzle “click” off. Topping off releases gas fumes into the air that contribute to ozone pollution and cancels the benefit of the pump’s anti-pollution devices.

  7. Replace lost gas caps to reduce pollution by preventing fuel evaporation.
